WHILE horse studs across the Hunter remained in lockdown yesterday, fashion fillies took to the track in Victoria for the launch of the Caulfield spring racing calendar.

Hilary Berry, 25, was introduced yesterday as the face of Caulfield's fashion carnival, stepping out in an Alex Perry-designed corset top and skirt.

The fashion launch signals the lead-up to the Melbourne Spring Carnival, which includes the Caulfield Cup on October 20 and the Melbourne Cup on November 6.

Only a handful of NSW horses are expected to line up for Melbourne's big race this year, due to the horse flu outbreak.

But Melbourne Cup Day celebrations will go ahead at Randwick racecourse minus the horses.

New Australian Jockey Club chief executive Norman Gillespie confirmed yesterday that Randwick would be open to the public on November 6 as scheduled but in the format of a phantom meeting.

Randwick has been locked down because of the equine influenza outbreak and racing is not expected to resume at the main Sydney track until at least December. The Age with AAP
